Basic Expectations for students and their families
  • Practice: As we all know, success at learning a musical instrument takes practice. The more time in front of your instrument the more it becomes second nature. For children and teens, expect to practice at least 3 times a week to see marked improvement. Children will likely need parental guidance to stay on track, especially in the early days of lessons. For adults I ask that your practice matches up with your goals; meaning I totally understand how busy life can get, and I'm more than happy to work with people who want music lessons to blow off steam, de-stress and have fun! That said, if you want to learn deep drum or beat making technique and become a really great drummer and/or producer, understand that it takes a lot of dedicated practice.

  • Active Listening: Listening to as much music as you can and getting excited about music is key to learning to play. I always love helping students learn songs they bring in and over time, you'll hear more and more of what we work on in the music you listen to.

  • Bring a notebook to lessons or keep an email log: Students need to bring a notebook for lesson materials and/or keep track of notes via email to keep up to date. Parents are strongly encouraged to stay engaged with what their children are working on in lessons as well.

  • Reach out: Make sure to let me know if there is anything specific you'd like to work on or if you're having any trouble with lesson materials. I'm always open to work with students towards their goals and help with any difficulties students are having.

  • Remember to have fun! Music is both super fun and exciting while at the same time difficult to pick up. While we work through hard concepts, remember to just play for fun regularly so that playing doesn't become too much of a chore.

  • Weekly lessons are encouraged and reserved for the student. Every-other-week and one-off lessons are also available and reserved one at a time.
