My thoughts on the Billy Cobham show

Well, I got to catch one of the master drummers Billy Cobham at Star theater last week and as you would expect, it was amazing. First thing to get out of the way is that the man is 75 YEARS OLD. And just like Bernard Purdie, who is 80, he still has the energy of a drummer half his age. It really is astonishing to see. Another cool thing I noticed was the bands really interesting usage of odd time signatures. A lot of times when people use odd meter it can have a stiff and jerky quality to it but they were plying in such a way as to make it very difficult to hear what the meter was because it was so subtle. It was a lot of fun to try and decipher what meters were being used. Lastly, I just have to say that drummers who were around in the 70s seem to have a great sense of timing when it comes to funk. It’s all in the way they swing and accent the beat. It’s really hard to find bands that can pull that off these days. If you’re unfamiliar with Billy Cobhams work, do yourself a favor and go check out his album ‘Crosswinds’ right now!!
