I’m extremely saddened by the passing of one of the greatest musicians I’ve ever known Sam Pilafian. He was proof that just because you’re one of the best musicians in the world (he’s the most recorded tubist of all time for example) you can still be a down to earth, approachable person. He was extremely important to me when I was a young and insecure jazz student who didn’t feel like I was doing a good job or fitting in. He never once made me think he wasn’t down to talk to me about music, rehearsal, or just how to make it as a musician in this world, and he never, ever put me down as a musician or human which floored me because watching him play was absolutely mesmerizing. When you’re that talented and successful you can treat people around you any way you want and he was never anything but a warm hearted, funny-as-hell gentleman and friend that I’ve always tried my best to emulate as a musician and teacher. He will be missed immensely by me and many, many people. ❤️❤️❤️
